How to Cancel Amazon Prime
Last updated: November 1, 2026
The short version: To cancel Amazon Prime, go to Account and Lists, open your Prime membership page, choose Update, Cancel, and more, then Cancel membership, and keep going until Amazon confirms the cancellation. Cancel before your trial or billing period ends and you will not be charged again. Already charged and used no Prime benefits since? A full refund is possible.
Prime is the free trial that is easiest to forget, because 30 days is long enough for it to feel permanent. It is also one of the biggest memberships on earth: CIRP estimated 201 million Prime members in the US alone at the end of 2025 (Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, 2026). People land here in one of two moments: before the charge, or right after it, asking about a refund. This guide covers both, for every way Prime can bill you. In September 2025, Amazon agreed to a $2.5 billion settlement with the FTC over Prime enrollment and cancellation practices, and the order requires an easy way to cancel Prime using the same method you used to sign up (FTC, 2025).
Key points before you start:
- Cancel where you subscribed. Amazon, Google Play, and carrier bundles are separate billing systems, and canceling in the wrong one does nothing.
- Deleting the Amazon app from your phone cancels nothing.
- Amazon will walk you through several “are you sure” screens. The cancellation only counts when you reach the final confirmation.
First: who bills you?
Your cancel steps depend on where you signed up, because that is who actually charges your card.
- Amazon bills you if you signed up on amazon.com or in a web browser. Cancel on Amazon’s website (steps below).
- Apple bills you only if Prime actually appears in your iPhone or iPad subscription list. Amazon’s help pages do not describe an Apple-billed Prime path, so check the list: if Prime is there, cancel it there; if it is not, Apple is not billing you.
- Google Play bills you if you signed up in the Android mobile shopping app or the Prime Video Android app. Amazon’s help page says those memberships must be managed through Google Subscription services. Cancel in the Play Store’s subscription settings.
- A carrier or bundle bills you if Prime came included with a phone plan or another service. In that case the membership is managed through that carrier or bundle, and Amazon’s own cancel screens may not end it.
If you are not sure, check your card statement for who took the money, and check both Amazon and your phone’s subscription list. It takes two minutes and it is the most common reason people get charged after they thought they canceled.
How do I cancel Prime on the web (Amazon bills you)?
- Go to amazon.com and sign in with the account that has Prime.
- Open Account and Lists, then Prime (your Prime membership page). You can also get there through Memberships and Subscriptions.
- Select Update, Cancel, and more.
- Choose Cancel membership, then follow the on-screen instructions. Amazon shows the benefits you will lose and may offer a reminder before renewal or a pause instead. Choose Continue to cancel on each screen to keep going. A reminder or a pause is not a cancellation.
- On the final screen, press End on [date], the button showing the date your benefits end, to keep Prime until the period you paid for runs out. If Amazon offers an end-now option, that ends benefits right away, and it is the choice tied to a refund of the current period (covered below).
- You are done when the confirmation shows the date your membership ends. Amazon also sends a confirmation email; keep it. Until you have one of those two, assume the cancellation did not go through.
How do I cancel if Apple bills me (iPhone or iPad)?
- Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap your name at the top, then Subscriptions.
- Tap the Prime subscription.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm. If Prime is not in the list, Apple is not billing you, and the web steps above are your path.
Amazon’s own help pages do not describe buying Prime through Apple, so this case is uncommon. Most people who think they subscribed in the iPhone app actually started on the web, which means Amazon bills them and the web steps apply.
How do I cancel if Google Play bills me (Android)?
- Open the Play Store app.
- Tap your profile picture, then Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Tap the Prime subscription.
- Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.
This path is straight from Amazon’s help page: signups in the Android mobile shopping app or the Prime Video Android app must be managed through Google Subscription services, so this list is the only place that stops those charges.
What if Prime came with my phone plan or a bundle?
If Prime was included with a mobile plan or bundled service, your membership is tied to that plan. Check the carrier’s app or account page for the Prime benefit and manage or end it there. Ending the carrier plan usually ends the included Prime too. A separate paid Prime signed up on amazon.com is a second membership and needs its own cancellation, using the web steps above.
How do I cancel the free trial before it converts?
The Prime free trial runs 30 days. When it ends, it converts to a paid membership automatically, at $14.99 for the first month or $139 if you picked the annual plan. To avoid any charge:
- Work out your trial end date the day you start. If you started on the 10th, the trial ends around the 10th of the next month, and that is when the first charge lands.
- Cancel before that date, in the same place you signed up, using the steps above.
- In the web flow, choose to end on the trial end date rather than ending now. You keep your Prime benefits for the full 30 days and you are not charged.
The trial costs nothing if you cancel in time. The risk is purely the forgetting, and 30 days is plenty of time to forget. In a 2026 survey by Self Financial, 70% of people said they had forgotten to cancel a free trial at least once.
What do I lose when Prime ends, and when does access stop?
Canceling ends the whole bundle, not just the shipping perk. You lose:
- Free fast shipping, including One-Day, Two-Day, and Same-Day delivery where offered.
- Prime Video streaming.
- Amazon Music Prime.
- Prime Reading, the rotating catalog of free ebooks and magazines.
- The extras tied to the membership, such as gaming benefits through Amazon Luna and unlimited photo storage.
When access ends depends on the choice you made on the final screen. If you chose End on [date], everything keeps working until that date. If you ended now, benefits stop immediately. For an annual plan, ending on the renewal date can mean keeping benefits for many more months you already paid for. For a monthly plan, it means days or weeks. Either way, ending on the renewal date is usually the better deal unless you are aiming for the refund described next, because a refund requires giving up the current period.
Things Prime does not control: books, movies, and music you bought outright stay in your Amazon library. Canceling the membership does not delete your Amazon account or your order history.
Already charged? How the Prime refund works
Amazon’s stated policy, in plain terms:
- Full refund: if you cancel and you have not used any Prime benefits since the most recent charge, you are eligible for a full refund of that billing period. Ordering something with Prime shipping, streaming Prime Video, or using another benefit counts as use.
- Benefits used: if you did use benefits in the current period, Amazon may give a partial refund based on that use. Amazon decides, and this guide cannot promise an outcome.
How to ask, without calling:
- Use the web cancel steps above and choose the end-now option on the final screen, if Amazon offers it. For accounts that qualify for the full refund, it is offered as part of this flow.
- If the flow does not offer a refund and you believe you qualify, open Amazon’s customer service chat from the Help pages and ask for a refund of the current Prime period, with the charge date ready.
- Refunds go back to the original payment method. Amazon says it will process the refund in three to five business days.
Annual members: the same rule applies to the yearly charge. A $139 renewal you caught the same week, with no orders shipped on Prime since, is exactly the case the full refund exists for. Monthly members lose less per mistake, but the policy is the same.
Prime Video add-on subscriptions (channels) need their own check
Prime Video add-on subscriptions (channels) like Paramount+ or HBO Max, subscribed through Prime Video, are separate subscriptions with their own renewal dates, billed through Amazon. Amazon says additional subscriptions tied to your membership won’t renew once your Prime membership ends, but its help pages have not always agreed on whether add-ons stop or continue. Do not rely on it either way. Cancel each add-on separately:
- Go to Account and Lists, then Memberships and Subscriptions.
- Find the add-on under your Prime Video Channels.
- Choose Cancel Channel and confirm.
The reverse is also true: canceling an add-on does not cancel Prime. If a charge keeps arriving after you ended Prime, an add-on subscription is one of the first places to look.
Amazon charged me after I canceled. What should I check?
Go in order:
- Find your confirmation email. If Amazon never sent one and you never saw a confirmation screen, the cancellation most likely never completed, usually because it stopped on a retention screen. Cancel again, fully, and keep the proof.
- Check for a second account. Many people have one Amazon account under an email address and a second one created on a phone. You canceled one, the other kept billing. Sign in each way and check the Prime page each time.
- Check your Amazon Household. Prime benefits are shared with the other adult in your household. If they started their own Prime membership, that is a separate charge on their account, not a second charge on yours. Make sure you are canceling the account that is actually being billed.
- Check Apple and Google Play. If either of them bills you, an Amazon-side cancellation does not stop it. Check both subscription lists even if you are fairly sure you signed up on the web.
- Check for add-ons. Prime Video add-on subscriptions bill on their own cycle. If you did not cancel them separately, check them before assuming the Prime cancellation failed.
- Check the timing. If your cancellation landed after the renewal moment, Amazon counts the charge as a new period. Go to the refund section above, because the no-benefits-used refund may still apply.
Amazon Prime cancellation FAQ
How do I cancel Amazon Prime and get a refund?
Cancel on the web (Account and Lists, Prime, Update, Cancel, and more, then Cancel membership) and choose the end-now option if Amazon offers it. If you have not used any Prime benefits since the charge, Amazon’s policy is a full refund of that period. If benefits were used, Amazon may give a partial refund based on that use.
I was charged for Prime after the free trial. Can I get my money back?
Often, yes. If the trial converted and you have not used Prime benefits since the charge, ask for the full refund through the cancel flow or customer service chat. The sooner you ask, the cleaner the case.
Can I cancel Prime and get a refund without calling?
Yes. The whole thing, including the refund for qualifying accounts, can be done self-serve on amazon.com or through the customer service chat. No phone call is required.
How long does a Prime refund take?
Amazon refunds to the original payment method, and Amazon says it processes the refund in three to five business days. Your bank may take a little longer to show it.
Will canceling Prime affect orders I already placed?
No. Orders already on their way keep their delivery terms, including Prime shipping they were placed with. Canceling affects future orders and future renewals, not packages in transit.
Do I keep my Prime Video purchases if I cancel?
Yes. Movies and shows you bought are yours and stay in your library. You lose access to the free streaming catalog that comes with the membership, not to your purchases.
If I cancel, can I rejoin Prime later?
Yes. You can resubscribe at any time from your account page. A new free trial is not guaranteed. Amazon limits trials per person, and if you rejoin later it will usually be at the paid rate right away.
How do I cancel Prime in the Amazon app?
In the app, tap your profile icon, then Your Account, then Manage Prime Membership, which opens the same flow as the web. If Apple or Google Play bills you, that path will not stop the charges; use your phone’s subscription settings instead.
Does canceling Prime cancel my Prime Video add-on subscriptions too?
Not reliably. Add-on subscriptions like Paramount+ through Prime Video are separate subscriptions with separate renewal dates. Amazon says tied subscriptions do not renew once Prime ends, but cancel each one under Memberships and Subscriptions anyway, so nothing is left to chance.
Never run this gauntlet again
Everything painful about Prime comes down to one thing: dates. The trial end date, the renewal date, the refund window. Amazon knows all of yours. The question is whether you do. And 30 days is long enough to forget completely, which is what the trial counts on.
That is the whole reason Sneaky Sub exists. It is a free tracker for free trials and subscriptions. When you start a trial, you add it with its start date and length, and Sneaky Sub counts down the days you have left, so the deadline is in front of you instead of buried in an order email.
The Prime version of this story does not have to happen twice. Add the trial the day you start it, and the next cancellation is a two-minute job on a date you chose, not a retention-flow negotiation on a date Amazon chose.
