How to Cancel Spotify Premium
Last updated: November 1, 2026
To cancel Spotify Premium, sign in at spotify.com, open your account page, choose Manage your plan, then Cancel subscription, and continue to the confirmation message. No cancellation fee applies. Canceling during a free trial ends Premium immediately. Paid plans run to the end of the paid period. If Apple, Google Play, or a partner bills you, cancel there instead.
Spotify is the friendly version of this problem. There is no annual contract hiding under the trial and no early termination fee. Spotify reported 306 million Premium subscribers in Q3 2026 (Spotify, 2026), and the cancel path works the same for all of them. The catch is timing: trials and promos often run 1 to 3 months, long enough to forget they exist. Cancel too early and you give up the rest of the trial. Wait too long and the charge lands. Picking the right day is the real problem.
The short version:
- Cancel where you subscribed. Spotify, Apple, Google Play, and partner billing are separate systems, and canceling in the wrong one does nothing.
- You cannot cancel inside the Spotify mobile app if Spotify bills you directly. Cancellation happens on the Spotify website account page.
- There is no cancellation fee, ever. Cancel during a trial and you are never charged, but Premium ends immediately. Cancel a paid plan and Premium runs to the end of the paid period.
- Your account is not deleted when you cancel. It drops to the free tier, and your playlists and saved music stay.
First: who bills you?
Your cancel steps depend on where you subscribed, because that is who actually charges your card.
- Spotify bills you if you signed up on spotify.com or in the desktop app. Cancel on the Spotify website (steps below).
- Apple bills you if you subscribed inside the iPhone or iPad app. Cancel in your iPhone’s subscription settings. Canceling on spotify.com will not stop Apple from charging you.
- Google Play bills you if you subscribed inside the Android app and your account page says Google manages the payment. Cancel in the Play Store’s subscription settings.
- A partner or carrier bills you if Premium came bundled with something else: a phone plan, a student bundle that includes a video service, or another partner offer. Your account page names the partner managing your plan, and the cancellation happens in that partner’s system, not on Spotify’s.
If you are not sure, open your Spotify account page first. It tells you who manages your plan. Then use the matching section below. Billing through the wrong system is the most common reason people get charged after they thought they canceled.
How do I cancel on the web? (Spotify bills you)
This is the main path, on a computer or in your phone’s browser. It does not work inside the Spotify app itself, which has no cancel function for direct-billed plans.
- Go to spotify.com and sign in with the account that has Premium.
- Open your account page (spotify.com/account).
- Choose Manage your plan.
- Choose Cancel subscription.
- Keep going until you reach the confirmation message.
- Read the confirmation message. If you canceled a free trial, your account reverts to Free immediately. If you canceled a paid plan, it shows when Premium ends.
The confirmation message is the proof the cancellation finished. Spotify may also send a confirmation email, but it does not promise one.
How do I cancel if Apple bills you? (iPhone or iPad)
- Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap your name at the top, then Subscriptions.
- Tap the Spotify subscription.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
If Spotify is not in that list, Apple is not billing you for it. Canceling here stops future charges from Apple. If you are in a free trial, Apple advises canceling at least 24 hours before the trial ends.
How do I cancel if Google Play bills you? (Android)
- Open the Play Store app.
- Tap your profile picture, then Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Tap the Spotify subscription.
- Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.
If Spotify does not appear in that list, you most likely subscribed on the web, and the web steps above are your path.
How do I cancel if a partner or carrier bills you?
Some Premium plans are sold and billed by someone else: a mobile carrier that bundles Premium with a phone plan, or a bundle offer where Premium comes with another service. If a partner manages your plan, that partner handles the cancellation, and Spotify support cannot cancel it for you.
- Open your Spotify account page and look at who manages your plan. The partner’s name is shown there.
- Sign in to that partner’s app or website (your carrier account, for example) and find the subscription section.
- Cancel the Premium add-on or bundle there, and keep the confirmation.
Bundles cut both ways. In the US, Hulu (With Ads) is included with Premium Student. Ending Premium Student ends that Hulu access too. There is no way to cancel just the Hulu half from inside Spotify. And canceling a separately billed Hulu subscription does nothing to your Spotify Premium. They are different bills, even if they feel like one product.
How do I cancel before my free trial ends?
Canceling during a trial stops the charge, but it also stops Premium right away. The rules are simple:
- If keeping Premium matters, wait until close to the trial end date shown on your account page, then cancel before it converts. Canceling early costs no money, but it does cost you the rest of the trial.
- You will not be charged. A canceled trial never converts.
- Your account reverts to Spotify Free immediately, and a zero-priced free trial cannot be reactivated.
That is the real trap: the safest day to cancel is near the end, and near the end is the easiest time to forget. A 1 to 3 month promo feels endless when you start it, and the end date arrives quietly. The charge people complain about is rarely a scam. It is a trial that did exactly what the signup page said, on a date nobody wrote down.
What happens after I cancel?
Canceling Premium is a downgrade, not a deletion:
- Paid plans run to the end of the period; trials do not. Cancel during a free trial and your account reverts to Free immediately. Cancel a paid plan and Premium runs to the end of the period you already paid for. The confirmation message and your account page show the switch.
- Your account drops to Spotify Free. You can still sign in, play music with ads, and use the app. Nothing about your login changes.
- Your playlists and library stay. Playlists you made, songs you saved, and your listening history all remain on the account.
- Downloaded music stops working offline. On Spotify Free, you can download podcasts, but downloaded albums and playlists are a Premium feature. Once the account switches to Free, downloaded music no longer plays offline; podcasts can still be downloaded.
- You can resubscribe whenever you like. Your account, playlists, and history will be waiting. Intro promo prices are usually reserved for people who have not had Premium recently, so a canceled trial generally cannot be restarted at the same promo later.
What if I am on a Duo or Family plan?
One rule covers both plans: only the plan manager can cancel. The manager is the person whose payment method is charged.
- If you are the manager, cancel using the steps for whoever bills you (Spotify, Apple, Google Play, or a partner). When the plan ends, every member drops to the free tier at the same time. Each member keeps their own account, playlists, and saved music.
- If you are a member, you cannot cancel the plan. You can leave from Manage subscription on your account page, but leaving does not stop the manager’s charges. If the bills need to stop, the manager has to do it.
- Members get no individual billing, so if you are a member and you see a Spotify charge on your own card, that is a separate subscription on a separate account. Check the list below.
Spotify charged me after I canceled. What should I check?
This almost always has a boring explanation:
- Check whether the cancellation actually completed. Sign in on spotify.com and open your account page. If it still shows Premium and a future billing date, the cancellation never finished. Cancel again, fully, and look for the confirmation message (and any confirmation email) this time.
- Check for a second account. This is the big one. Spotify lets you sign in with an email address, Facebook, Google, or Apple, and each of those can quietly be a different account. You canceled the account you use, while a second account from some long-forgotten signup still holds Premium and your card details. Sign in each way and check the plan status on each account.
- Check Apple and Google Play anyway. Even if you are fairly sure you subscribed on the web, look at both subscription lists. If Apple or Google Play bills you, a cancellation on Spotify’s website does not stop their charges.
- Check partner billing. If Premium came through a carrier or a bundle, canceling on Spotify’s site was never going to work, because Spotify does not hold the billing. Your account page names the partner. Cancel there.
- Check the timing. If you canceled after the renewal date, the charge you are looking at is the new period starting, not a billing error. You keep Premium for that period. Spotify’s refund policy does not promise a refund for that period.
- Ask about a refund, but do not count on one. Spotify’s refund policy does not promise refunds for Premium; if a partner billed you, that partner handles any refund. You can contact Spotify support (or the partner) with the charge date, the cancellation date, and the confirmation message (and any confirmation email) if you have them. If a confirmed cancellation was followed by a later charge, your card issuer can dispute it, and that confirmation is the evidence that matters.
Spotify cancellation FAQ
How do I cancel Spotify Premium?
Sign in on spotify.com, open your account page, choose Manage your plan, then Cancel subscription, and continue until you reach the confirmation message. If Apple, Google Play, or a partner bills you, cancel in their system instead.
Can I cancel Spotify Premium in the app?
No, not if Spotify bills you directly. The mobile app has no cancel function for direct-billed plans; you cancel on the Spotify website account page, which works fine in a phone browser. If Apple or Google Play bills you, cancel in their subscription settings.
Will Spotify charge me if I cancel?
If you cancel before your trial end date or before your next billing date, no. Canceling stops future charges, and a canceled trial never converts into a paid plan. The only charge that can still land is for a period that already started before you canceled.
Is there a cancellation fee for Spotify Premium?
No. Spotify has no cancellation fee and no early termination fee, because Premium is not an annual contract. You can cancel in your first month or your fiftieth and the cancellation fee is zero.
What happens to my playlists when I cancel Premium?
Nothing. Your playlists, saved songs, and listening history stay on your account when it drops to the free tier. What changes is Premium access: cancel a paid plan and Premium runs to the end of the paid period; cancel during a free trial and Premium ends immediately. On Free, ads return and downloaded music stops playing offline, but podcasts can still be downloaded.
I am on a Duo or Family plan. Can I cancel my own membership?
Only the plan manager can cancel the plan. If you are a member, you can leave from Manage subscription on your account page, but leaving does not stop the manager’s billing. If the manager cancels a paid plan, Premium ends for every member at the end of the current period. If the manager cancels during a free trial, Premium ends immediately.
How do I cancel Hulu through Spotify?
If you have Premium Student in the US, Hulu (With Ads) is included and is not a separate subscription you can cancel on its own. Ending Premium Student ends the Hulu access too. If you want to keep Hulu, set up a separate Hulu subscription billed by Hulu before you cancel Spotify.
Can I get a refund after Premium charges me?
Do not count on one. Spotify’s refund policy does not promise refunds for Premium, and you generally keep Premium until the end of the period you paid for. If a partner billed you, ask that partner about refunds. You can contact Spotify support with the charge date and cancellation date.
Never get caught by a trial end date again
Everything frustrating about Spotify canceling comes down to one thing: the date. A three month promo is easy to say yes to in June and impossible to remember by September. Spotify knows your trial end date. The question is whether you do.
That is the whole reason Sneaky Sub exists. It is a free tracker for free trials and subscriptions. You add a trial with its start date and length, and Sneaky Sub counts down the days you have left, so the deadline sits in front of you instead of buried in a signup email.
Spotify is the easy version of this story: no fee, no contract, just a date that slips. Add the trial the day you start it, and the next cancellation is a two minute job on a date you chose.
